St. Peter and Paul Church

The Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul is a landmark of the city of Hochheim am Main that can be seen from afar , it is considered the only late Baroque fresco church in Hesse .

Building history

It was built between 1730 and 1732 on the foundations of the previous church by the Mainz engineer-captain Johann Farolsky .

In 1775 Johann Baptist Enderle , who came from Söflingen (now part of Ulm ) and lived from 1725 to 1798, created the late Baroque frescoes in the nave and high choir and on the two gallery balustrades.

restoration

Cracks in the vault, soiling from dust and candle soot, and repairs and repainting, which were often unprofessionally carried out, seriously damaged the frescoes. These restoration attempts were made in the years 1852, 1896, 1930 to 1932 and 1970 to 1972.

Static safety measures were also necessary. When cracks appeared in the walls in 1989, it was obvious that the church was in danger of collapsing. The building was secured between 1993 and 1995, including a complete exterior renovation with today's white-red color scheme.

Experts, however, declared the precious frescoes to be irredeemably lost. The reason for this judgment was that in the 1950s the roof beams had been impregnated with wood preservatives , whereby the chemicals used had penetrated through the ceiling into the fresco, darkened the representations and destroyed the substance.

Contrary to the prognosis, it was nevertheless possible to save the frescoes. The restoration work lasted from 1999 to 2005. The frescoes can now be seen again in their original colors and vibrancy. The restoration work is documented in a workbook for the preservation of monuments in Hesse.

At noon on January 30, 2016, a confessional was probably completely destroyed due to arson and the building was smoky. The resulting damage was repaired over a period of more than a year, so that the church could be reopened in its new / old splendor on Palm Sunday 2017.

Artwork in the rose garden

Since 2006, the sculpture Great Rhythm (2000) by the sculptor Rudolf J. Kaltenbach has been installed in the rose garden next to the church . The artist, who, born in Hochheim, had been an altar boy as a child in St. Peter and Paul for ten years, donated the approximately 1 tonne work made of Swedish black gabbro to the Catholic Church. The shape of the sculpture can be read as a sign of infinity.
