history

According to legend, the holy bishop Wolfgang von Regensburg is said to have lost his way in this area on his hike to the Salzkammergut in 976. A thrown ax showed him the way out of the forest. The pilgrimage church of St. Wolfgang was built at the point where the ax struck.

The pilgrimage hamlet with church, farmer's house, sacristan house and tavern belonged to the Weng office of the Griesbach regional court in 1752 and belonged to the Weng administration. When the community was formed in the 19th century, Sankt Wolfgang came to the community of Weng , with which it came to Griesbach in 1972 as part of the regional reform in Bavaria .

Pilgrimage Church of St. Wolfgang

The church, consecrated in 1411, was enlarged towards the end of the 15th century and redesigned in Baroque style in the 18th century. It belongs to the parish of St. John the Baptist (Weng) . At the apex of the choir is the Chapel of Grace with a healing well. A mural with the 14 helpers from around 1420 can be seen in the choir . The rococo high altar houses an image of St. Wolfgang around 1900 and the baroque side figures of St. Sigismund and St. Quirinus of Siscia . In this church Johann Birndorfer, known as the Capuchin brother Konrad von Parzham , was baptized on December 22, 1818. He has been venerated as a saint since 1934 .
