The Sankulay Kunda Bridge (sometimes also called Janjangbureh-Sankulay Kunda Bridge ) is a road bridge built between 2009 and 2010 in the West African state of Gambia . It spans the roughly 100-meter-wide left southern branch of the Gambia on Janjanbureh Island and replaces a river ferry that has been operated up to now .

The bridge, around one kilometer north of the small town of Sankulay Kunda , connects Janjanbureh , with the headquarters of the Central River Region administrative unit , better to the Gambian transport network. About 1.5 kilometers further south, the road leads to South Bank Road .

The foundation stone was laid on May 13, 2009 when the ferry crossed in the presence of President Yahya Jammeh and the Taiwanese Ambassador Richard Shih in Banjul . In June it was expected that construction of the bridge could be completed in October of the same year. The Senegalese Compagnie d'Entreprise Sahelienne (CSE) was commissioned with the construction .

The Taiwan government donated a sum of 2.75 million US dollars , which its ambassador handed over on June 8, 2009, to build the bridge . Presenting the check, Jammeh emphasized the importance of the bridge to the region and recalled that there had been several tragic accidents in the past, including a 1992 accident involving a Gambia Public Transport bus Corporation (GPTC) fell into the river.

The total construction costs were estimated at three million US dollars (= 78 million Dalasi ). A concrete bridge was originally planned, but the construction would have been more expensive (5.5 million US dollars) than the current project and only had a life expectancy of around 45 years. A steel bridge with a life expectancy of 100 years has now been built. The bridge is 121.9 meters long and 7.32 meters wide, the capacity of the bridge is 350 tons. She had been given a footpath 1.5 meters wide.

The bridge was inaugurated on July 13, 2010 in the presence of President Jammeh.
