Sant'Antonio di Ranverso

Sant'Antonio di Ranverso is a former abbey in the small village of Buttigliera Alta west of Turin at the entrance to the Susa Valley (Val di Susa). It was founded in 1188 by Umberto III. founded by Savoy .

history

Ranverso comes from the Latin Rivus Inversus , which means a canal north of the moraine hills. The abbey, consecrated to St. Anthony the Hermit , was inhabited by Antonian monks, who ran a hospice there for pilgrims traveling across the Alps and who fought the Antonius fire by rubbing them with pork fat . The Romanesque church was built with the newly founded abbey.

The complex underwent numerous changes in the centuries that followed. Only the facade of the hospice remains today.

The church was changed around 1300 in the Lombard- Gothic style and a campanile was added. On the church walls there are frescoes from the 13th century and a cycle of frescoes by the Savoy court painter Giacomo Jaquerio around 1430 depicting the Cross of Jesus in the sacristy . The frescoes in the presbytery were by Defendente Ferrari from 1531.

Under Pope Pius VI. In 1776 the abbey became the property of the Order of Mauritius .
