Sant Pere Gros

Sant Pere Gros is a Romanesque church in the town of Cervera in the Comarca Segarra , in the interior of the Spanish autonomous region of Catalonia .

The circular church building is a typical example of Lombard architecture from the 11th century. Sant Pere Gros is one of the best preserved round churches of medieval Catalan architecture. The round nave is covered with a round dome and a semicircular apse with a bell tower in the northeast. Inside there are six large semicircular niches.

history

The church was first documented in 1072, when it was privately owned. In 1081 the church was donated to the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll . In the 15th century, with the decline of the Priors of Ripoll , it was no longer used by Benedictine monks , but served as a chapel for the Diocese of Vic .

It is worth mentioning that, despite the abandonment, a classical altar was erected in the 18th century . In 1960 Sant Pere Gros was restored and is now one of the sights of the municipality of Cervera. In 1993, by resolution of the government of Catalonia ( Artículo 12 de la Ley 9/1993, de 30 de septiembre, del patrimonio cultural catalán ) Sant Pere Gros was listed as a historical monument.
