history

A church with the same name is mentioned in a document as early as 899; today's church, however, was completed around 1130/40. Nothing is known about the client or clients. Since there is a Marian shrine a little below the church, one can assume that Sant Pere also belonged to the complex and was used as a pilgrimage church. The church building was fundamentally restored around 1900 and in the 1950s.

Exterior construction

The ground plan of the church is roughly based on a Latin cross , with the two transept arms shaped as apses . The entire building is essentially made of stones that are hewn regularly. Special features are the three-cornered choir , the three-arched but otherwise unadorned south porch ( galería porticada ) and the bell gable ( espadanya ) attached to the side above the south apse and visible from afar ; the west facade was completely devoid of decoration. The three apses are divided by pilaster strips , each ending in round arch friezes - in Catalonia this is referred to as ' Lombard ' forms. Otherwise the exterior is completely unadorned.

portal

The arched portal, which is protected by the south porch and raised six steps, is also devoid of any structural adornment; a great rarity, however, are the originally preserved spiral-shaped iron wrought ironwork on the two wooden door leaves, which were originally intended to protect against harm ( apotropaic ) and are comparable to those of the Prieuré de Marcevol ( Roussillon ).

Interior

The barrel-vaulted nave has a single nave and is approximately 6.20 meters wide; it is illuminated through two small windows on the south side and one in the west, while the north side has no windows. Of the three apses, only the south apse is sparsely lit by a small window. The middle apse is two steps higher than the rest of the room level.

Furnishing

In the Museu Episcopal de Vic two wooden side panels of the former altar painted with the apostles Peter and Paul are shown, which were made around 1300 and were brought there in the 19th century.
