Santa María Apazco is a place with about 500 inhabitants and the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name ( municipio ) with a total of about 2,000 inhabitants in the northwest of the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico .
Location and climate
The place Santa María Apazco is a good 35 km (driving distance) northeast of the city of Asunción Nochixtlán at an altitude of approx. 2160 m . The climate is dry and warm; the overall rather sparse rain (approx. 530 mm / year) falls mainly during the summer half-year.

economy
Probably already in pre-Hispanic times, the area was of Mixtecs settled -Indianern. The people of the region still live largely self-sufficient from the yields of their fields (corn, wheat) and gardens (potatoes, beans, tomatoes, chilli, etc.). Cattle breeding is only practiced to a limited extent (chickens, turkeys). Hats, bags, etc. are made from small Jipijapa palms.

The Indians living here resisted both the Aztec and Spanish occupations.
Attractions
The double-towered parish church of La Purísima Concepción is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary . It is an overall rather unadorned rural building from the 18th century with vaulted openings in the otherwise windowless nave . In the apse, which is covered by an unexposed dome , is a late Baroque carved altar.
