Santa Maria (Schaffhausen)
The Santa Maria Church was built in Schaffhausen , Switzerland between 1883 and 1885 . It was the first Roman Catholic church to be rebuilt in Schaffhausen after the Reformation and belongs to the diocese of Basel .
Building history
The then city-state of Schaffhausen converted to the Reformation in 1529 . After that, no Catholic parish could be founded in Schaffhausen for a long time. It was not until the beginning of the 19th century that a small Catholic diaspora formed due to immigration . From 1841 onwards, the Anna Chapel near the All Saints' Day Minster was allowed to use it for regular Catholic services. The chapel soon became too small for the growing Catholic community. In 1865 it was able to acquire a building site for CHF 12,000 in addition to the Fäsenstaubpark built in 1802 above the old town. In 1882 it was decided to build a church there. The plans came from the then cantonal master builder Johann Christoph Bahnmaier. The neo-Gothic Marienkirche in Stuttgart served as a model . On August 9, 1885, the church was consecrated on the "Assumption of Mary". For many decades, however, the church and parish have been officially and commonly called Santa Maria. In 1890 a canopy was built over the main altar . In 1969/70 the church underwent an exterior renovation. The decorative elements were removed from the tower and nave. The interior was redesigned between 1977 and 1979.
