Santa Maria de Lluçà

Santa Maria de Lluçà is a former Augustinian - monastery in the Spanish province of Barcelona in the autonomous region of Catalonia and has a completely preserved Romanesque cloister with figured capitals . It is off the beaten track on a narrow road between Vic and Berga .

history

A St. Mary's Church was consecrated here as early as 905. In the 11th century a community of Augustinian monks settled here. The present church was built during this time and the cloister was built in the 2nd half of the 12th century. In the 16th century the monastic community dissolved and the church served as a parish church.

church

The portal of the church still has its original Romanesque iron fittings. The church has a single nave , has a slightly broken barrel vault and ends in a semicircular apse . A transept is indicated by two chapels . The Gothic wall paintings of the choir have been removed and restored and are exhibited in side rooms. The Romanesque font comes from the church of Salcelles . The wooden cross and the altar antependium with scenes from the life of Mary are copies, the originals are in the Diocesan Museum of Vic. The entrance to the cloister is on the south side of the church.

Cloister

The cloister, in which the stone fountain is still preserved, has an irregular floor plan. The north and west galleries consist of four arcades , while the east and south galleries consist of five arcades. The galleries of the cloister have a wooden beam ceiling. Animals and plants, mythical creatures and human figures are depicted on the 22 capitals. It is noticeable that the motifs have no relation to Christian topics. Individual representations suggest that they were inspired by the Gilgamesh epic . This is taken as evidence that Arab stonemasons were at work here, as well as the depiction of exotic plants such as lotus blossoms or the partial lack of a central keystone above the arches, which requires advanced knowledge of geometry.
