The Borgo Angeli with the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli

Santa Maria degli Angeli , also Chiesa di San Lazzaro in Santa Maria degli Angeli , is a Roman Catholic church in Mantua ( Italy ). It was the religious order of the Dominican convent of the same name, founded by Gianfrancesco I Gonzaga in 1429 , became the property of the Franciscans in the 17th century and has been a parish church since the late 18th century.

Location, construction

The group of houses at Borgo Angeli, on the banks of Lake Superiore, built around the church, has largely retained the character of an ancient fishing village to this day.

The entrance front of the church on the north side is characterized by a mighty pointed arch portal and a round window above. The portal is decorated with flowers. The facade is provided with battlements that continue on the right side to the apse, flanked by a striking jagged bell tower. The interior consists of three naves, cross vaults and keystones depicting a daisy (the heraldic flower of the Gonzagas), two angels and a lamb. Another reference to the earlier lords is the large coat of arms of the Gonzagas. The jewel of the church is a panel of the Madonna degli Angeli , which combines the Gothic style and the new spirit of the Renaissance that Andrea Mantegna brought to Mantua. It is a late 15th century work attributed to Nicolò da Verona . The Via Crucis is more recent. It was designed by Aldo Bergonzoni (1899–1976), an artist from the city.

history

Gianfrancesco I. Gonzaga , the Margrave of Mantua, and his son Ludovico III. Gonzaga commissioned a number of churches. Gianfrancesco's three daughters went to the monastery. In 1429 the margrave founded the convent of the Reformed Dominicans in the former village of Angeli , today Castelnuovo Angeli , a district of Mantua. One of the important clerics of the monastery was the later beatified Matteo Carreri (1420-1470), who worked as an itinerant preacher and died in Vigevano . A memorial plaque in the cappella feriale commemorates him . The monastery was dissolved in 1652.

The Franciscans then settled there and stayed there until the abolition of the monastery in 1769. The following year it was decided to make the church the seat of the parish of San Lazzaro, but the transfer of the parish title lasted until 1798. The original parish church of San Lazzaro was demolished in 1796 for defense reasons. In 1901 the parish had 825 residents.

The parish was part of the Vicariate of Cerese for a long time and was assigned to the City Vicariate of Santi Apostoli in 1967. The responsible bishop is that of the diocese of Mantua .
