Matteo Carreri OP , born Gian Francesco Carreri (between 1420 and 1425 in Mantua - October 5, 1470 in Vigevano ), was an Italian Dominican and religious priest who was beatified in 1625 .

life and work

Carreri came from a noble family from Mantua and is said to have looked angelic as a child. The beauty of his body and the goodness of his heart led him to some confusion, but with the grace of God he was able to overcome them.

At the age of twenty, Cerreri entered the Dominican convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli near his hometown and took the religious name Matteo . During the novitiate , the Father of the Order had to soften Brother Matteo's excessive enthusiasm. He was ordained a priest and was master of novices for many years . He practiced prayer, penance and study, thus preparing himself for the years as a preacher in which he strengthened the believers in Lombardy, Tuscany, Liguria and Veneto and converted those who doubted. The passion of Christ was at the center of his sermons. Father Matteo was sent to Soncino in the province of Cremona, and later to Vigevano . In all these convents he brought a new spirit of humility and rigor of observance. With clear words he condemned the desecration of the holidays and the indulgence in idleness and amusement.

Father Matteo is said to have worn the wounds of Christ and the spiritual father of St. Stephana Quinzani . Two years after his death she joined the Terziarinnen in Crema and thirteen years later founded a monastery of the Third Order of the Penance of St. Dominikus , which she directed until her death.

Father Matteo died on October 5th, 1470 in Vigevano. Many miracles are said to have followed his death. His relics are in San Pietro Martire .

Canonization

In 1482, Pope Sixtus IV gave the residents of Vigevano the right to commemorate Father Matteos in the liturgy . In 1518 they declared him the patron saint of the city. On December 2, 1625 Pope Urban VIII beatified Father Matteo Carreri OP. His feast day is October 5th .
