Description and history

View from the south

The church is located about 2.5 kilometers west of Fratta Todina in the Località Spineta on the road to Collelungo (district of San Venanzo ).

The building was built in the 11th century and was first mentioned on June 5, 1291 in a document from Pope Nicholas IV , who approved the expansion of the building complex. It was one of the first eleven places that Pope Gregory XI. on July 28, 1373 the newly formed observance movement around Paolo di Vagnozzo da Foligno (also Paoluccio Trinci) awarded.

The current church was built between 1724 and 1737 in the classicism style and was consecrated on August 25, 1737 by Ludovico Anselmo Gualterio, the then bishop of Todi . The two-story choir behind the chancel was built in 1765. Spineta served as a novitiate until 1927 .

inner space

Inside the church there is a copy of the panel painting Natività , originally called Lo Spagna in 1550 by Giovanni di Pietro . The author of the copy is Vincenzo Cannnuccini. The original is now in the Vatican Museums and was removed by Napoleonic troops in 1811 to be brought to France via Rome. After the end of the Napoleonic occupation in 1814, the picture remained in Rome despite the demands from Fratta Todina. A copy was then made, which was also removed from Spineta on May 1, 1867 and taken to Todi Town Hall. Only the then mayor of Fratta Todina, Luigi Pascocci Gambogi, was able to return the copy of the painting to Spineta on July 16, 1871.
