Santa Maria dels Àngels is a Roman Catholic church in Pollença on the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca .

Architecture and history

The parish church was founded by the Knights Templar . Even today it is called a temple in parlance. The central nave is Gothic and has side chapels . Large parts of the church, such as the arched vault and the cornice , are of baroque origin. Most of the current building was built between 1714 and 1790 and goes back to the architect Juan de Aragón . In the following period, work was still carried out to complete the church. The facade of the building is simple. A rose window is integrated in the south gable above the portal.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the bell tower was raised. The previously pyramid-shaped roof of the tower on the northeast corner was replaced by a flat roof. At the same time the roof of the church was lowered to the level of the side chapels.

Interior design

There are two holy water fonts in the porch of the church . The walls are decorated with plaques and paintings. There are six side chapels on each of the long sides. Above the side chapels there are murals depicting the cloister of Christ, created in the 20th century by Atilio Boveri and Eugen Mossgraber . The vaults are also decorated with paintings. The colored windows in the rose window and the side windows were created by Guillem Reynés , a student of Gaudi. The organ is arranged on a gallery below the rose window .

Main altar

Today's main altar originally stood in the Monti-Sion Church and was erected around 1800 as a replacement for an older altar in Santa Maria dels Àngels and adapted for its new location. In the lower level of the altar there is an image in the middle niche that is exchanged according to the respective liturgy. So there can be a representation of the resurrected Christ or the Lord's Supper. To the side of this are the Saints Barbara and Ignatius as well as Saint Teresa and Saint Joachim.

On the second level there is a statue of Mary the Angels created by Miquel Arcas Pons . The Archangel Michael and St. Charles Borromeo as well as the Archangel Rafael and St. John Nepomuk can be seen on their sides . Above all, Peter is shown the glorification of Christ.

The main portal of the church is on the south side towards Plaça Major. In its current form, it was created at the end of the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style . At the portal there is a representation of the patron saint with angels. It was founded by Llorenç Ferrer from Santanyí - sandstone created.

Left side chapels

On the left side of the vestibule is the baptistery of the church with a baptismal font. In the chapel there are paintings of Saints Mary the Angels and Ramón Llull .

On the left side of the church, towards the entrance, is the chapel of the patron saint of the church with a 15th century depiction of the Virgin, which goes back to the Templars. The next chapel on the left is the Mariae-Himmelfahrts-Kapelle. In it is an altar, on the middle panel of which the Assumption of Mary is depicted. The deceased virgin is shown at the altar foot. It is said that the bishop Vich i Manrique praised the picture as "very kind and graceful".

On the west side of the church there is a portal to the old town square. Above the portal there is a picture of St. Gabriel on the inside. Originally it was in the lower niche of the main altar of the church.

The next chapel on the left is the Sankt-Jakobs-Kapelle. It depicts Saint Jacob with John the Baptist and John the Evangelist. The subsequent Chapel of the Immaculate Conception was run for a long time by the family of the poet and priest Miquel Costa i Llobera . The chapel received a floor made of Binissalem stone and a cladding with white marble . The family also donated the statue of Mary in the chapel.

The Josefskapelle is the northernmost of the left side chapels. It depicts scenes from the life of the Holy Family of Nazareth.

Right side chapels

The first side chapel on the right is the Chapel of Saint Catalina Tomas. In the past the chapel served as a communion chapel . A step provided with a grid is based on this use. In addition to the patron saint of Mallorca, the chapel also serves to worship the holy martyr Catherine, Saint Lucia and Saint Christopher.

In the Saint Sebastian Chapel there is a rococo altar with an image of Saint Sebastian on the side wing.

In the Chapel of the Most Holy Sacrament, the bread blessed at the Lord's Supper is kept. The chapel has an altar made in Art Nouveau style by the sculptor Miguel Arcas . It is the only altar in the church that is not from the Baroque period. The well-known priest and poet Costa i Llobera is buried on the side of the chapel .

The chapel of St. Anthony contains a figure of the saint created by an unknown sculptor, who calls on the population to take part in the great pine tree festival.

A crucified Christ can be seen in the blood chapel. The landscape visible in the background was created by Miguel Llinàs .

Finally, the last chapel on the right contains a copy of the Virgin of the Puig de Maria . The original of the figure is in the chapel on the Puig de Maria. An ornament in the chapel is dedicated to St. Francisco Xavier.
