Coordinates: 41 ° 53 ′ 45.7 ″ N , 12 ° 28 ′ 9.1 ″ E The church of Santa Maria di Monserrato , also Santa Maria in Monserrato degli Spagnoli ( Latin : Sanctae Mariae Hispanorum in Monte Serrato ), is in Rome in the Regola district. It was built in 1518 based on designs by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder. J. started as a church of the Aragonese and Catalans . 1582–84,the lower part of the facade was built according to plans by Francesco da Volterra ; the church was at least largely completed around 1673/75. Santa Maria di Monserrato has been the Spanish national church in Rome since 1807.
In the church are the tombs of the two Borgia popes Calixtus III. (1455-1458; Alonso de Borja) and Alexander VI. (1492–1503; Rodrigo Borgia), as well as the Spanish King Alfonso XIII. In 1980 the remains of the former king were transferred to the Pantheon of Kings of the Monasterio de El Escorial .
Interior
- First chapel on the right
It is consecrated to Saints Philip and Nicholas. The altarpiece by Annibale Carracci depicts Saint Diego of Alcalà . On the right wall is the modest grave monument for the two popes from the Borgia Calixt III family. and Alexander VI. which was only completed in 1889 by the sculptor Felipe Moratilla. Including the grave monument for the Spanish King Alfonso XIII. († 1941).

All the paintings and frescoes are works by Francesco Nappi : the altarpiece The Annunciation and on the sides The Birth of Mary and The Assumption of Mary in Heaven
- Third chapel on the right
The chapel is richly decorated with polychrome marble. The altarpiece by Francisco Preciado de la Vega († 1789) depicts the Virgin of Pilar and the two saints Jacob and Vincent Ferrer .
- Choir
The presbytery in its current form was only laid out in the 19th century. The altarpiece (oil on canvas) The crucifixion in the center of the apse is the work of Girolamo Siciolante da Sermoneta (1564 - 65).
- Third chapel on the left
It was originally dedicated to the Holy Crucifix. In 1882 the marble statue of Jacobus the Elder by Jacopo Sansovino was erected here. On the lower right side is the grave monument for Bishop Alfonso de Paradinas and on the left for Bishop Juan de Fuensalida, the secretary of Alexander VI, both come from the workshop of Andrea Bregno .

The chapel is dedicated to the Lady of Montserrat .
- First chapel on the left
The group of figures in the St. Eulalia of Barcellona chapel dedicated to St. Anna Selbdritt . It is a work by Tommaso Boscoli from 1544. On the arch at the top right there is a tabernacle for the sacred oils by Luigi Capponi , a student of Andrea Bregno.
