history

A first church was founded by a brother Pietro of the Spanish congregation of the Discalced Carmelites, probably around 1602 on a garden plot in the immediate vicinity of the palace of the Duke of Nocera . It was originally called Santa Teresa Plaggie because the place where it was built was much closer to the sea then than it is now. Thanks to generous donations from the Neapolitans, especially a noblewoman named Isabella Mastrogiudice, the church was rebuilt larger and more beautiful from 1650 to 1662 under the direction of the architect Cosimo Fanzago .

The earthquake of Sannio in 1688 but caused significant damage, which resulted in further renovations and alterations.

description

The church is a valuable testimony to the Neapolitan baroque. It was built on a much higher level than the street and can be reached by stairs. The facade has a vertical tripartite structure and a rich and elegant stucco decoration . The bronze portal is flanked by two niches with statues. Round medallions with portraits of saints are located above the portal and the niches , and in the middle above the door is the title saint, Saint Teresa. On the second and third levels of the facade there are small crowning obelisks .

The interior of Santa Teresa a Chiaia

The interior is shaped like a Greek cross and houses some significant works of art. The marble statue of Saint Teresa on the main altar is the work of Cosimo Fanzago, while the numerous stucco sculptures that are scattered across the church are the work of his workshop. By Luca Giordano four altarpieces originate: the Rest on the Flight into Egypt and the childhood of Mary on the two altars of the transept and also the Holy Peter of Alcantara will appear Saint Teresa (on the altar of the chapel left of the main altar) and Saint Peter of Alcantara confesses to Saint Teresa (above the entrance door). In the chapel to the left of the main altar there is a crucifix by Andrea Vaccaro , while on the right a painting by Giacomo Farelli with the Virgin, the Holy Simon Stock the Scapular presented and a visitation by Fabrizio Santafede . Three large canvases stand out in the choir: the Trinity by Giovanni Tommaso Fasano , the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa by Nicola Viso , and the Adoration of the Shepherds by Girolamo Cenatiempo .

In the sacristy there are baroque furniture and paintings by Paolo De Matteis , Sebastiano Conca and other artists. A small cloister with a fountain adjoins the church.
