The Church of Santo Cristo de San Sebastián in Coruña del Conde , a municipality in the Spanish province of Burgos in the autonomous region of Castile and León , was built in the 11th or 12th centuries. It is believed that the apse dates from the 6th century and goes back to a previous church from the Visigothic period. In 1983 the church was declared a monument ( Bien de Interés Cultural ).

architecture

A square, straight apse adjoins the single nave nave in the east. The nave and apse differ in their masonry. The apse is made of the large, regularly cut ashlar stones typical of Visigoth architecture , while the Romanesque nave is made of stones of different sizes. The interior of the church is unadorned.

A triple arcade is cut into the east facade of the apse . Of the two central half-columns , only the left one is completely preserved. The right column shaft is missing, only the capital remains. The spandrels between the arches are filled with reused stones from a Roman pilaster . In the gable of the apse there is a large stone slab with a relief of a man. He is depicted with long hair and a raised hand and is dressed in a pleated skirt.

The north and south sides of the apse are occupied by a twin arcade. The column shafts of the two central columns are missing, only the capitals are preserved. The capital on the north side, decorated with acanthus , is probably a Roman spoil . On both sides, stone slabs, which are decorated with a chessboard frieze and rest on carved corbels, run under the roof approach. On these human faces, grimaces, animals and fantasy beings are depicted.

Capital of the portal

portal

A round arched step portal with three simple archivolts opens on the south side of the nave . Only the middle sheet travel is provided with a decor checkerboard fries and coarse round rod provided. Of the two columns, the left one with its capital, which is decorated with stylized foliage, is still preserved. The posts are composed of fragments of fluted pilasters. The portal is framed by a rectangular wall protrusion and covered by stone slabs with stars and crosses carved in the front.

Roman spoil in the outer wall

Roman spoils

Numerous spoils from the ruins of the nearby Roman city of Clunia have been built into the entire building . Gravestones were reused, on which the inscriptions can still be seen. The relief of a head and a cornucopia is shown on a stone. Fluted pilasters were used for the posts of the portal. A millstone was also walled up in the facade.
