Sar-e-Sang is a place in the Kuran va Munjan district of the Badakhshan province in Afghanistan . It is located at an altitude of 2560 meters above sea level and has about 800 inhabitants.
The western Hindu Kush and thus also this place was already known in antiquity for its large deposits of lapis lazuli (for about 6000 years), lazurite and sodalite of good quality gemstone .
Sar-e-Sang, more precisely the nearby lapis lazuli deposit Ladjuar Medam ( Lajur Madan ), is also a type locality for the minerals Afghanite and Lasurite .
