Sarah Bernstein

Sarah Bernstein (* around 1985) is an American jazz and improvisation musician ( violin , language, electronics, composition).

Life

Bernstein is from San Francisco and obtained a Bachelor of Violin Performance from the California Institute of the Arts and a Master of Arts in Jazz Studies from CUNY Queens College. She worked from the mid-2000s a. a. with Peck Allmond , Bob Reddy , Jason Kao Hwang , Adam Rudolph , Anthony Braxton , Steve Swell , Taylor Ho Bynum , James Ilgenfritz , Hans Tammen and Ron Anderson . With her duo / trio Iron Dog (with Stuart Popejoy and Tommaso Cappellato) she recorded the album Field Recordings 1 ; around 2012 she presented her debut album Unearthish (with Satoshi Takeishi ), in which she combined sound experiments with the spoken word. Bernstein recorded the live album Live st Gravesend with Kid Millions Feb. 11, 2015 at 8pm . The album Still / Free ( Leo , 2016) followed in a quartet line-up (with Kris Davis , Stuart Popejoy , Ches Smith ). With Kid Millions, Bernstein released the duo album Tense Life (577 Records) in 2017 . In addition to her jazz projects, she works as a musician and composer for multimedia performances, chamber music (with Scott Tixier, Mat Maneri and Rubin Kodheli) and film scores. She lives in Brooklyn. In 2020, she won the Down Beat critics poll as best violinist in the Rising Star category .
