Stupa in Sarnath |
Sarnath ( Hindi सारनाथ IAST Sārnāth ) is a place in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India , 10 kilometers north of Varanasi . After his enlightenment , Siddhartha Gautama taught the Dharma and founded the Sangha in the Sarnath Wildlife Park . The monk Kondanna achieved his enlightenment here. Along with Bodhgaya , Kapilavastu and Kushinagar , Sarnath is one of the four most important Buddhist pilgrimage destinations.
meaning
After Siddhartha Gautama achieved his enlightenment in Bodhgaya 45 BBE (589/525 BC), he preached the so-called Four Noble Truths (these contain the eightfold path to Nirvana ) for the first time in the wildlife park (Migadaya) in Sarnath and thus founded the Buddhism . (M. 141, Saccavibhanga Sutta)
The five former companions from the years of strict asceticism (Kondanna, Bhaddiya, Vappa, Mahanama and Assaji) were ordained as monks ( Bhikkhu ) by the Buddha on this occasion , thus establishing the Buddhist order ( Sangha ).
The archaeological survey of India excavations since the early 19th century established Sarnath as one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Buddhists from all over the world. Remains of stupas , monasteries and one of the pillars of the Ashoka bear witness to the importance of the place up to its destruction in the 12th century.
