Satsvarupa dasa Goswami

Satsvarupa das Goswami (born December 6, 1939 in New York ) ( Devanagari : सत्स्वरूप दास गोस्वामी , satsvarūpa dāsa gosvāmī ) is an older student of AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada , of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), better than in the West Hare Krishna movement known and founded. In his service role as a writer, poet and artist, Satsvarupa dasa Goswami is the author of the authorized biography of Bhaktivedanta Swami Pabhupada, Srila Pabhupada-lilamrita .

Satsvarupa das Goswami was one of the eleven disciples selected to become initiating gurus in ISKCON after the death of Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Satsvarupa dasa Goswami is one of the first few Westerners to be initiated by Prabhupada in September 1966.

He has now been recognized as one of the most prolific Vaishnava writers and poets. While traveling, lecturing on Krishna consciousness and teaching students, he has published more than 100 books comprising poems, memories, novels and studies based on the scriptures of the Vaishnavas.

In recent years he has created hundreds of pictures, drawings and sculptures that represent an attempt to capture and express his immersion in the culture of Krishna consciousness.

Early years

He was born on Staten Island , New York , the elder of two Catholic parents , and was baptized Steven. His training began in a public high school in the vicinity. He then enrolled in Brooklyn College, where he experienced an intellectual revolution that led him to start questioning his Catholic values.

“As soon as I started studying, I experienced an intellectual revolution. Any regal feeling I picked up from my mother was pushed aside by my university professors who were die-hard Marxists, 30s Americans. They taught me their spiritual and aesthetic views and briskly dismissed my religious practice as sentimentality. One of them claimed that theology could never satisfactorily explain why there was evil in the world. I was drawn to their philosophy because my parents were not intellectuals and had never awakened my intellectual faculties, while my lecturers revealed a whole new world to me. I developed a strong desire to study philosophy and literature. I came to the personal insight that the church was hypocritical: in the entrance area of our church the priests regularly raffled off bottles of spirits (they called them 'joy baskets'). I became dissatisfied with the Catholic Church because it did not provide answers to my questions. "
