The oxygen plant II of the Heeresversuchsanstalt in Peenemünde on Usedom was used in the Second World War for the production of liquid oxygen for the propulsion of Aggregat 4 rockets ("V2").

Building

The building is 73.10 meters long, 42.60 meters wide, 20.80 meters high and is a listed building . The three-and-a-half- storey brick-clad building was built using a skeleton construction. On the roof there is an elongated single-storey structure with horizontal window sills. The former oxygen works has a sacred building structure. The 5-aisled, asymmetrical floor plan with 9 bays, which corresponds to that of a basilica, is striking.

history

Construction of the plant began at the end of 1939 with the use of forced labor (concentration camp inmates and prisoners of war). Oxygen Plant II went into operation on July 27, 1942. By the end of the war in 1945, air was broken down into its components using the Linde process and the oxygen was cooled to −183 ° C and liquefied. Between 20 and 25 megawatts of the generated output of the Peenemünde power plant went to the plant in which the gas was produced with great technical effort.

After the war, the facility was (partially) dismantled from 1947 and the building was partially blown up in 1948 as part of the Allied agreements. Stone robbery and other looting finally returned the building to its current state.

During the GDR era, parts of the ground floor were converted into storage rooms.

After reunification , the property was owned by the Federal Republic of Germany . After the object did not find a buyer on September 23, 2004 at an auction for a minimum bid of € 20,000, it was later sold for a price below this limit.

Various measures are currently being taken to secure the ruined building and make it accessible to visitors. It is planned to put the building in the limelight through light installations on the walls.
