Saul Formiggini (* 1807 in Trieste ; † July 8, 1873 ) was an Austrian doctor and translator who was active in Trieste. He created the first translation of the Divina Commedia into Hebrew.

Life and works

Saul Formiggini published his dissertation De aneurysmatibus internis in 1830. 1844 were followed by Scritti vari "del dottore S. Formiggini medico-chirurgo in Trieste", which were published in Venice , and in 1858 the book Three Days in Trieste was published. As early as 1852, from issue 9, Formiggini and O. Occioni took over the editing of the monthly Letture di famiglia , which was published by Österreichischer Lloyd in Trieste .

In 1864 Formiggini published Per le faustissime nozze della nobile donzella Elodia de Hierschel , again in Trieste, followed in 1865 by Dodici epigrafi poetiche a centone dantesco .

Formiggini translated Dante's Divina Commedia into Hebrew between 1867 and 1869 . The first part of this translation of the Inferno was printed in Trieste in 1869. The other two parts about the purgatory and paradise were not published. Lelio Della Torre dealt with Formiggini's Dante translation in the book Sull'Inferno di Dante , published in Padua in 1871 .

In 1868 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order ; 1873 the Knight's Cross of the Brazilian Order of Roses .
