Saulius Štombergas (born December 14, 1973 in Klaipėda ) is a Lithuanian basketball coach and former player. While he ran up in the club mostly as a small forward , he took in the national team due to the competition in this position by Artūras Karnišovas rather the role of a power forward . He has been the head coach of Žalgiris Kaunas since 2013 .

Career

In his first season in the squad of Žalgiris Kaunas Štombergas won the championship and cup double in 1993. After three years with Atletas Kaunas , he moved to China to Vostok Shanghai in the CBA , where he was one of the league's first international stars. Back at Žalgiris Kaunas, he won two more Lithuanian championships within the following two seasons, the 1998 European Cup Winners ' Cup and, surprisingly, the 1999 European Cup . One season each followed in Italy at Kinder Bologna (finalist in the 2000 European Cup Winners' Cup), in Spain with Saski Baskonia (finalist of the Euroleague 2001) and in Turkey with Efes Pilsen Istanbul (double from championship and cup 2002). After another Lithuanian championship with Žalgiris Kaunas, Štombergas moved to UNICS Kazan in 2003 , where he was able to celebrate winning the FIBA EuroCup . At this club he also played from 2005 to 2007 after having been active for Fenerbahçe Ülker in the 2004/05 season . In 2007 he announced the end of his career, which he postponed only a short time later in favor of a commitment to the Lithuanian second division club Palangos Naglis-Adakris . From 2009 to 2010 Štombergas was again active at UNICS Kazan.

National team

Štombergas was one of the main pillars of the Lithuanian national team for years. His greatest success with her was winning the 2003 European Championship , where he was captain of the team and was also elected to the all-tournament team . He was able to celebrate further medal wins at the European Championships in 1995 (silver) and the Olympic Games in 1996 and 2000 (both bronze). After the Olympic Games in 2004 , where he was the flag bearer of the Lithuanian team and once again reached the semi-finals, Štombergas ended his career in the national team. In 97 international matches, he scored a total of 1,036 points for Lithuania.
