Sausalito Houseboat Community
The Sausalito Houseboat Community is a settlement of houseboat owners in Sausalito , California .
history
It originated in the 1950s and grew particularly in the wake of the American hippie movement that began in San Francisco in the 1960s as an expression of an alternative lifestyle. After years of fighting over the legal status of the settlement, the community is now an integral part of the city of Sausalito.
Strictly speaking, it is in the dwellings in the majority not to Houseboats (Engl. Houseboats ) but houseboats (Engl. Floating homes ), as these are not the same as in external appearance with boats and also can not move of its own accord.
In April 2012, the community comprised around 245 houseboats at a total of five jetties protruding into Richardson Bay . The American soul singer Otis Redding wrote the first lines of his song Sitting on the Dock of the Bay on one of these boats in 1967 .
Cinematic processing
In 1974, the film "Last Free Ride" (see web links) was made, which thematized the dispute between the authorities of Sausalito and the houseboat community from the early 1970s. This dispute, also known as the Battle of Richardson Bay and House Boat Wars, centered on the houseboat community's battle against plans to disband the houseboat colony in order to develop the area along Richardson Bay. In the independent film produced by Roy Nolan and Saul Rouda , many of the houseboat owners played themselves. Today, the approximately 84-minute film offers an insight into the life and thoughts of the early Sausalito Houseboat community and also gives a vivid idea of the status of the settlement Mid 1970s.
