Sautörl (2012)

The Sautörl is the last remaining city gate of the Austrian city of Judenburg in the Murtal district . The Sautörl is a listed building (see the list entry ).

location

The Sautörl is located at the northern end of the former city wall of Judenburg on Capistrangasse. Outside the Sautörl is the Klostersteig - a footpath that can be used to climb the slope on which the city was built.

The Klostersteig leads across a meadow with some apple trees to the Paradeis district . From the Klostersteig you can see the cast steelworks (today Stahl Judenburg ).

history

Apparently the Sautörl was built in the 13th century; in 1537 it was officially designated as “fleischacker torr” and in 1662 as “sauthor”. In the 14th century meat banks were installed in the area around the Sautörl.

Originally, six city gates were installed in the Judenburg city wall: in the west the upper country gate (or Mönchstor ) and the Schmiedtor (or castle gate ), in the north the Sautörl and the Judentürl (or Heiligengeisttürl ), in the east the lower country gate and in the south the Fischertor ( or Windischtor ). Only the Sautörl has been preserved.

The Capistrangasse , at the end of which is the Sautörl, was formerly a butcher's street and was called "Saugasse" from the 14th century - the Sautörl was also used for driving cattle . In 1362 Duke Rudolf IV. Acquired the building next to the Sautörl, the Mösch farmhouse, from a Jew named Haesel and passed it on to his financial administrator as a fief. By the first owner Rueprecht dem Steyrer it was named in the 14th century this Mösch farmhouse as "Steyrerhof" in documents. It was significantly rebuilt around 1500. Later it was owned by the aristocratic family of the Teuffenbacher , Archduke Karl II stayed there during a few stays in Judenburg. Around the middle of the 18th century, the Möschbauernhaus was home to the post office , toll and customs office .

The former Paradeiskloster , the building of which is located at the lower end of the Klostersteig, was the monastery of the Poor Clares dedicated to St. Mary in the Paradeis - the district is named after this monastery.
