The construction of the free-standing city tower on the main square began in 1449, the completion of the construction was not carried out until around 1520, after a fire in 1504, by the stonemason Michel Pircher. After fires in 1670, 1709 and 1807 the tower was rebuilt. The tower was raised by Michael Zearo in 1841–1842, and in 1884 a viewing gallery was added.

The mighty, four-story tower is 75 meters high and has a pointed, broken tent roof. The late Gothic east portal was restored in 1963. Four Roman stones were walled in in the 19th century.
