Sauteurs (pronunciation: Sau-tez, dt. "Springer") is the northernmost settlement on the island of Grenada in the island state of the same name in the Caribbean . The place is the main town of the Parish Saint Patrick on the north coast.
geography
The place is on the north coast between the mouths of Little Saint Patrick River and Saint Patrick River in Sauteurs Bay and Irvins Bay , respectively . In between is the Caribs' Leap cliff , which gives the place its name. Road connections lead mainly to the south-west ( Union) and to the south-east ( Morne Fendue ). Smaller connecting roads lead west to the northernmost point of the island, Little David Point ( ⊙ ) The main trade on site is fishing.
history
Tradition has it that the last Caribs of Grenada jumped from the 40 meter high Caribs' Leap cliff here when they were faced with the choice of either surrendering to French rule or of dying in 1651 . In 1664 Dominicans built a grotto and a grove as a resting place for their souls. This monument still exists today. In 1721 the French built St Patrick's Catholic Church , which was handed over to the Anglican Church by the British in 1784 . However, the original building was destroyed by fire. Today there is a police station on the spot . In 1840 a new St Patrick Catholic Church was built and it still exists today.
On March 1, 1796, with the help of the HMS Favorite (1794) , the armed transport ship Sally , and two commandeered sloops, British troops and military equipment that had been encircled there during the uprising of Julien Fédon ’s rebellion were evacuated .
education
In 2012 there were six public schools in the area. Additional facilities include St. Patrick's Multi-Purpose Training , a branch of the TA Marryshow Community College (TAMCC).
