Saxonia International Balloon Fiesta 2009

The Saxonia International Balloon Fiesta was the third largest balloon festival in Europe. In 1995 the Fiesta started with 5,000 visitors and 100 hot air balloons in the Schweta district of the small Saxon town of Mügeln . Over a million people have now attended the event. The Balloon Fiesta was organized by the marketing agency Wohlfahrt GmbH. The hot air balloons were primarily financed by sponsors.

In 1996 the event was moved to Leipzig . The area of the Lößnig-Dölitz recreation park was suitable because it is outside the official flight corridors . Due to the superstition in aviation, the 13th Fiesta was skipped in 2007 and the 14th Fiesta was held. There was a break in 2008.

In 2012, the area of the festival meadow at the central stadium near the city center of Leipzig was used before the event started for the first time in Halle (Saale) on the local horse racing track in 2014 . More than 20 balloons and airships ensured a colorful spectacle of colors in the sky over Halle in the morning and evening.

Competitions such as fox hunts, balloon flights and key grabs were held in Leipzig as well as in Halle. On four days there were the mass launches of hot air balloons and other aerial acrobats. After sunset, the balloons gathered on the ground to glow and for torch parades. There were also entertainment and stage programs.

Due to lack of time on the part of the organizer, the last fiesta took place in 2015.
