Sayeba Akhter

Sayeba Akhter ( Bengali সায়েবা আক্তার born 1953 in Chittagong ) is a doctor from Bangladesh who is best known for her innovative treatment methods in the field of obstetrics and gynecology . She was awarded the Ekushey Padak of the Government of Bangladesh in 2020 for her services in the field of women's health .

Life and medical career

Sayeba Akhter attended Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Dhaka , where she also received her doctorate in medicine. Sayeba Akhter was head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital when she became aware of the problem of many mothers dying from postpartum bleeding shortly after birth . In 2000, Sayeba Akhter invented a simple and cost-effective way to stop this bleeding, which is responsible for a third of all maternal deaths . She used a catheter and a condom and made an intrauterine tamponade on them. This method was widely used and was also known as the Sayebas method.

Sayeba Akhter became the 2011 Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists appointed.

Sayeba Akhter is President of the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Bangladesh and Vice President of the International Society of Obstetric Fistula Surgeons .
