Sbiba (also Sabibah ; Arabic سبيبة) is a city with around 6,000 and a delegation with a good 40,000 inhabitants in the Kasserine Governorate in central Tunisia .
location
Sbiba lies at an altitude of approx. 620 to 650 m above sea level. d. M. in western Tunisia in the dorsal of the Tell Atlas . The state capital Tunis is approx. 215 km (driving distance) in a north-easterly direction; the town of Kasserine is about 63 km southwest. The Oued Sbiba runs south of the city, but only has water for a few weeks a year.
economy
The economy of the region is dominated by agriculture , especially fruit and vegetable cultivation (apples, tomatoes). The smuggling of goods between Algeria and Tunisia also plays a not insignificant role in the city's economic life.
history
Sbiba was very likely a former Berber settlement ; the Romans built the city of Sufes in their neighborhood , which was taken over by Byzantium in the 6th century . The Muslim Arabs conquered the region in the second half of the 7th century.
Attractions
- The as yet unrestored ruins of the Roman city of Sufes with the remains of a temple, a Byzantine fortress and a church - converted into a mosque in the 7th century - rise not far from today's city.
- About 20 km southeast of the city is the nature reserve of Djebel Mghilla.
