Scalpay ( Scottish Gaelic Sgalpaigh or Sgalpaigh na Hearadh ) is an island in the Outer Hebrides ( Scotland ), southeast of the island of Lewis and Harris , with which it has been connected by a bridge since 1997. It is located in East Loch Tarbert Bay . In 2011 there were 291 people living on the island, mainly from fish farming and shrimp fishing.
The Eilean Glass Lighthouse stands on Scalpay , a successor to the oldest lighthouse in the Outer Hebrides from 1789. The current tower was built in the 1820s by the lighthouse engineer Robert Stevenson , the grandfather of the author Robert Louis Stevenson .
