The Schäfersee is an approximately 4.5  hectare , approximately seven meters deep, almost circular lake in Berlin-Reinickendorf .

Naming, history, description

The lake is named after an earlier sheep farm that was established on the lakeshore in the 18th century . The sheep farm is still shown on a city map from 1921, but not after that.

The park around the lake was completed in 1928 and is now a protected green area and garden monument. The reeds in the western part were protected by a moat, it should serve as a retreat and breeding place for the water birds.

A café and a mini golf course offer recreational and leisure opportunities for the people of Reinickendorf. There is a large playground for children. The boat rental is closed.

In the west there is a sports field and an allotment garden; the path around the lake is lined with trees of the year .

In the north are the listed city library (inaugurated in 1962), a leisure and a senior citizens' home. Immediately to the east of the lake is the Franz-Neumann-Platz underground station on the U8 line .

Park on the Schäfersee

The Schäfersee, together with its listed park, is included in the Zukunft Residenzstrasse project as part of the Active Centers funding program.

The project aims to a. a complete redesign of the entire lake area. To this end, a restricted landscape planning competition was held in 2018 . The results will be shown in the (new) town hall Eichborndamm 215 until March 18, 2019. A nine-member expert jury selected the design by the Levin Monsigny landscape architects from the 17 entries submitted as the winner. The winning design stipulates that the circumferential riverside path will be redesigned and that the various functions as a walking, cycling and recreational path can be better experienced. At the same time, the access areas on Residenzstrasse and Stargardtstrasse will be expanded to make the lake itself more accessible again. Nature and biotope protection are taken into account. Around 1.2 million euros are available for the work and should be completed in several construction phases by 2020.
