The Schöneburg , and Old Castle is an Outbound medieval castle on a northern projection (520 m above sea level. NN) of the mountain Schorn ( 559.1  m above sea level. NN ) in the Rhon in Dermbach .

history

According to older traditions, Schöneburg Castle was built as a facility for the Counts of Neidhartshausen . The parish chronicle of Dermbach names Count Erpho von Nithardishusen as the builder and owner of the complex. The castle was used to monitor an old road from Geisa via Dermbach towards Wasungen at the upper edge of the Oechse valley and supplemented the fortifications near Dermbach and on the Baier, which were important in early historical times .

description

The rectangular castle complex with a plateau of 42 m (north-south) and 30 m (east-west) is secured on three sides by a wall with a deep moat. In the northwest, steep slopes offer natural protection. The access was obviously from the south. The brick foundations of three buildings are visible.
