geography

location

Schönenberg is less than a kilometer northeast of the Untermünkheimer valley village of Enslingen on the upper left edge of the slope of the Kocher valley . The river runs here about 150 m deeper in the so-called Kochereck northeast to east through a valley about 1.5 km wide between the slope shoulders in the Upper and Middle Muschelkalk. The hamlet already belongs to the Hohenlohe Plain , which stretches north from here as a slightly hilly and almost forest-free landscape with a lot of agricultural use. South across the valley from Schönenberg you can see the Haller level around Eltershofen . About two kilometers to the east, the Kocher makes its arc to the north just before the Bühler estuary near Geislingen am Kocher in the community of Braunsbach . About two kilometers to the north-northeast lies Rückertsbronn, also in Braunsbach, on the plateau beyond the upper valley cut of the short goat blade. Gaisdorf , another Untermünkheim hamlet on the plateau, is about a kilometer to the northwest.

Schönenberg is a small, rural place with a few, traditionally quite large farms. Above all in the south at the beginning of the slope there is a soft patch of tree-lined meadows in front of him, which is then joined at the upper bend of the slope by a belt of forest only about a hundred meters wide, below which the southern slope of the Pfaffenberg falls into the valley. In earlier times, wine was grown on this southern slope. In the other directions the fields start very close. About one kilometer to the east, the forest begins in the Gewann Schäfferloch on the plateau, which here pulls down the slope of the Kochers running to the north. On the spur above the bend in the river lies the Schäfferloch castle stable , of which only small remains of ditches and hills are evidence. There are sinkholes in the field to the east and northeast of the village.

Transport links

Schönenberg can be reached by road from the west via the K 2566, which branches off a connecting road that leads north from Enslingen first over a steep serpentine road and then straight on to Gaisdorf on the plateau. From this hamlet in the northeast, another public road joins it shortly before the start of the village. In a northerly direction, a developed field path leads to the K 2556, which, as a so-called Weinsteige, leads down the Geißklinge towards Geislingen; the route continues as K 2559 to Rückertsbronn. There are no road connections to the east and south due to the steep valley slopes.

From Enslingen a path leads up an old, stony church path up to Schönenberg. In an easterly direction, an initially paved dirt road runs to the Schäfferloch and continues there from the spur, initially steeply downwards in a poor clay path, which then again reaches the lower Weinsteige as a flatter dust path.
