Schüttenhoff

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schüttenhoff is a multi-day festival with a re-enactment of historical musket exercises in Bodenfelde in southern Lower Saxony . Its roots go back to the 17th century, making it one of the oldest such events in Germany.

Surname

The word Schüttenhoff, also Schüttenhof, is linguistically related to Schützenhof / Schützenfest. In the Middle Low German language "schutten" means "protect".

history

The beginnings of the Schüttenhoff go back to the year 1674. Residents of Bodenfeld sent a petition to Duke Johann Friedrich , in which they requested the festival. The reason they gave was that the Landgrave of Hessen-Kassel held an annual festival in the nearby town of Lippoldsberg , in which the residents of Bodenfeld also took part. As a result, the Duke escaped the consumption tax and, after the experience of the Thirty Years' War, exercises in the use of the musket were considered necessary. The Duke complied with the request and gave the place a 9-  acre plot of land (the so-called Schüttenkamp), which has since been used to finance the festival through agricultural income. The festival takes place every five to six years on the weekend of Pentecost , although this was not always observed.

The idea was later implemented in other places in the area. The places Fredelsloh and Lauenberg jointly carried out a Schüttenhof in 1874, which took place in the Fredelsloh district and consisted of participants who were divided into staff and officers as well as armed and unarmed teams.

procedure

The Staff Unit (2014)

In front of the grandstand, the participants split into two parties and compete against each other. The characters are in historical costumes and fire their muskets into the air. Accompanied by units of the cavalry and several bands of music, the combat troops then move through the village.

The following units work at the Schüttenhoff (last expansion around 1900): staff, artillery, young guard, hussars (until 1927: cavalry), old guard, hunters, navy, pioneers and paramedics.

Monuments

Schüttenhoff Marine Memorial

A disused fairway buoy was installed on the quay in Bodenfelde in 2012 as a memorial for the marine group that takes part in the Schüttenhoff. There is also a memorial stone for the Alte Garde group at the mouth of the Reiherbach .
