The fast minesweepers of the Schütze class (class 340/341) were in service in the German Federal Navy from 1960 to 1995.

Origin and use

The type of the fast minesweeper is a further development of the mine clearance boats and was newly created with this class. In terms of their operational profile, they replaced the clearing boats of the German Navy and continued the basic concept of these boats developed by A&R during the Second World War . They could be used as minesweepers and mine layers.

Twenty boats were built for the German Navy by the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard, five more each were supplied by the Schlichting shipyard in Travemünde and the Schürenstedt shipyard and boatyard in Bardenfleth. According to the first construction program, the costs were 7.33 million DM per boat. Six other boats were built by Abeking & Rasmussen for the Brazilian Navy in the early 1970s.

The name of the class was derived from the first boat put into service. Other boats were also given names of constellations and celestial bodies. The boats of the Schütze class formed the 1st minesweeping squadron in Flensburg, the 3rd minesweeping squadron in Kiel and the 5th minesweeping squadron in Neustadt / Holst. This was relocated to Olpenitz in 1967. Although the boats were originally designed for a service period of only 15 years, individual boats remained in service for over thirty years. Because the superstructures and bulkheads made from Central African Ilomba softwood ( pycnanthus angolensis ) became "soft, lazy and spongy" due to fungal attack, the "Schütze" type minesweepers often required shipyard visits for repairs and conversions.

From 1973 the first boats were taken out of service and some of them were sold through VEBEG . The last two boats were active until 1995. Some of the boats were scrapped and some were used by private buyers as yachts or houseboats or were used as home boats for naval fellowships.

technical description

With the exception of a non-magnetic steel plate at the bow, the hulls of the boats were made of teak and mahogany with three diagonally planking . The other metallic parts of the boat were made of little or non-magnetic metals as much as possible in order to reduce the magnetic signature of the boats to protect them from magnetic mines . In addition, they were equipped with an MES system for this purpose .

The only difference between the two types, 340 and 341, was the installation of different diesel engines; the first ten boats were fitted with two Mercedes-Benz 16-cylinder engines with 2250 hp each, the following were equipped with Maybach 16-cylinder engines. The Maybach engines made about 130 hp more. Both types of engine worked via a reduction gear.

To power the on-board systems, three diesel generators with 96 HP each were on board. The electricity to supply the electromagnetic clearing device was generated by a separate 900 PS generator.
