Schaanwald is a district of the municipality of Mauren in Liechtenstein . Schaanwald had 818 inhabitants in 2011.

Schaanwald lies at the foot of the Maurerberg and is separated from Mauren by the Maurer Riet. The St. Therese von Lisieux chapel, consecrated in 1939, is located at 465 m above sea level. M . Schaanwald is located directly on the border between Liechtenstein and Austria and on the main road 16 Buchs - Schaan - Schaanwald. Its continuation in Austria leads as Liechtensteiner Straße (L 191a) to Feldkirch . The “Swiss Customs Office Schaanwald in the Principality of Liechtenstein” is the most important border crossing between Liechtenstein and Austria. Schaanwald suffers from traffic congestion, as around 15,000 vehicles pass through the town every day. Schaanwald has a stop on the Feldkirch – Buchs railway line . At the Schaanwald stop, which has been a listed building since 1999, there are no longer any scheduled stops.

history

From the end of the 1st century AD to the 3rd / 4th century AD. Century was close to the Roman road Milan - Bregenz a Roman villa . The name Schaanwald appears from 1390 in the border descriptions of the lordships of Jagdberg , Feldkirch and Schellenberg . From 1782 to 1870 Schaanwald was a way money station . Schaanwald grew into a street village with 27 houses by 1900 and received its own school in 1899. When the war ended in April / May 1945, thousands of refugees congregated on the Austrian side at the Schaanwald- Tisis border crossing .
