The Schapendoes (officially: Nederlandse Schapendoes = Dutch Schapendoes) is a Dutch breed of dog recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 1, Section 1, Standard No. 313 ).

Origin and history

The Dutch Schapendoes (pronunciation: S (sharp S) ch (as in German the ch from roof) apendus ) is a typical dog for herding flocks of sheep, for this he must be able to act largely independently. He is long-haired, lightly built and has great jumping power. The Schapendoes was the shepherds' "all-world dog" on the heathland of the Dutch province of Drenthe and the Veluwe , so commonplace that it was hardly ever found in literature and painting. He was never considered a pedigree dog in the past , but rather a working dog . He also had no special, uniform name, but different names such as Herderdoes , Siep , Olde Grise and so on. He probably appeared at dog shows between 1872 and 1874 under the name Domestic Herding Dogs . As an independent breed, it only began to be interesting between the two world wars, when the Dutch began to be interested in “their own”, down-to-earth breeds. The cynologist Pieter M. C. Toepoel is the founder of the breed. Systematic breeding of the Schapendoe, which had almost disappeared at the time, began between 1940 and 1945. In 1952 the breed was temporarily recognized by the Dutch breeding association Raad van Beheer . The first standard is from 1954, at the same time the keeping of a stud book was started. The definitive recognition took place in 1971. Since then, only registered dogs have been bred because the breed is still in the process of being established and must be bred very responsibly. A similar and related dog breed that is not recognized by the FCI exists in Germany as the sheep poodle , which is one of the old German herding dogs .
