history

At the end of the Second World War , on February 10, 1945, the sons of Ernst Heinrich Prince of Saxony , Dedo and Gero and the district forester buried 43 boxes. Under torture, the forester later revealed the hiding place to the Soviet occupying forces. A large part was then excavated and brought to what was then the Soviet Union as looted art in 1947 . At least parts of the stolen family treasure of the Wettins can be seen today in the Hermitage of St. Petersburg (e.g. August the Strong's baptismal font ). It is believed that the rest is also stored in the St. Petersburg depots.

The discovery

However, three boxes were buried elsewhere and therefore did not fall into the hands of the Red Army soldiers. They were discovered in October 1996 by the treasure hunters Hanno Vollsack and Claudia Marschner with a metal detector. After two days of hesitation, the two reported the find. The treasure eventually went to its rightful owner, House Wettin . The two treasure hunters were sentenced to a fine, but received a reward from the Wettin house . In 1997, the treasures were presented to the public in an exhibition in the Georgenbau of the Dresden Residenzschloss . Most of the treasure was then auctioned. A very valuable piece, the so-called "Mohrenkopf-Pokal" by the Nuremberg goldsmith Christoph Jamnitzer from the 16th century, can be viewed today in the Bavarian National Museum in Munich . The total value of the find is estimated at twelve million euros. In addition to the Mohrenkopf goblet, the most valuable items are a coin collection and parts of August the Strong's silverware .
