Solidus of Valentinian

The treasure trove of Landegge , a district of Haren in Lower Saxony , consists of:

  • three model-like C- bracteates with eyelets - one of them with border decoration and an almandine under the eyelet - and the strongly stylized representation of a human head over an animal.
  • a D-bracteate, with a snake-like animal with a bird of prey beak. The bracteate, which was probably struck in the late 6th century, is best preserved and, in contrast to the heavily worn solidus, almost fresh from the mint.
  • a gold solidus with an eyelet minted between 364 and 367 by Valentinian I (364–371 AD);
  • as well as a blue glass bead and pearl-like silver jewelry.

The occurrence of a solidus in a deposit of Nordic gold bracteates is unique in Lower Saxony. It shows the change of coins from a means of payment to a piece of jewelry. In addition, Roman solidi were used, presumably as raw material, for the production of the gold bracteates. The pieces were deposited in this depot in the 6th century AD.
