The Schauenburg is the remnant of a summit castle on the 722 meter high "Schaufelsen" on the edge of the Danube Valley , about three kilometers south of the municipality of Stetten am kalten Markt in the Sigmaringen district in Baden-Württemberg .
history
The name of the castle is derived from the Old High German "scouwa" or the Middle High German "Schouwe" with the meaning of waiting or watchtower. The castle was probably built during the 13th century by the knights of Schauenburg, a Gotwinus de Schowenberc can be documented from 1270 . He possibly came from a ministerial family of the Counts of Hohenberg .
In 1430 the Schauenburg was destroyed by the Counts of Sigmaringen , later, in 1497, the ruins were mentioned as Schowenberg the castle stables owned by the Lords of Hausen .
description
Small remains of the wall on the northwest side and the remains of a building made of roughly hewn small blocks on the southeast side have been preserved from the former castle on a mountain ridge on the steep slope to the Danube valley. Two small ditch sections in the north and south delimit the approximately 22 × 28 meter large inner castle area on the castle rock, which slopes vertically around 120 meters to the west.
