The playhouse was a theater in the Thuringian state capital Erfurt . It is located in the cloister corridor in the southwestern old town.

history

The theater was built in 1897 as a clubhouse in a neo-baroque style based on a design by architect Georg Weidenbach . The client was the Resource Society , founded in 1780 , a gentleman's association consisting primarily of "military and civil servants, merchants and educated citizens", which at that time was of great importance in the city. From 1946 to July 1949 the house housed the Theater des Tanzes under the direction of Henn Haas .

In 1949, the year the GDR was founded, the building was taken over by the city and converted into a theater under the direction of the architect Walter Beck . It was opened on August 29, 1949 with a performance of Iphigenia on Tauris . At first it was called the New Theater , from 1956 it was then called the Erfurt Theater . In 1957 the small stage was added. From 1997 to 2003, when the Alte Oper was closed for structural reasons, the theater was the only remaining theater in the city.

In 2002 the city decided to close the theater after the opening of the new building of the Erfurt im Brühl theater and to dismiss the actors. Since then the house has been empty and left to decay. On May 1, 2013, the theater was occupied by left-wing activists. Lord Mayor Andreas Bausewein then filed a criminal complaint. After a day, the police stopped the occupation.

From May 2015, Saxonia Media Filmproduktion used parts of the theater to shoot the children's series Schloss Einstein .

In September 2015 the city council of Erfurt decided to commission the Erfurt association KulturQuartier Erfurt eV, founded in 2013, with the development of a usage and operator concept for the former theater. On November 4, 2016, the KulturQuartier Schauspielhaus eG iG cooperative was founded as the first cultural cooperative in Thuringia to take over the property and manage it for cultural purposes in accordance with its statutes. To attract supporters, well-attended “previews” were held in November 2015, April 2016 and August to September 2017, as well as an event entitled “Unfinished” with cultural performances in April 2017.
