The false lichen fungi ( Hypocreopsis ) represent a genus from the family of the crustball relatives , whose species form stroma on the trunks of trees and bushes . These are orange-brown and consist of radial ascocarp lobes.

Systematics

The genus includes three types:

The type species is Hypocreopsis lichenoides (Tode) Seaver (1910).

description

Macroscopically , the species are largely similar, only H. lichenoides forms brown, floury spots of conidia on the surface of its lobes. The species can, however, be distinguished by the morphology of their spores : H. lichenoides has ellipsoidal to short spindle-shaped spores with a septum ; H. rhododendri has spherical spores with a septum, which can also be absent, and H. amplectens has cylindrical spores with two to three septa.

distribution

Hypocreopsis amplectens and H. rhododendri are restricted to areas with a maritime climate . Hypocreopsis rhododendri occurs on the western edge of Europe, but was also found in the Appalachian Mountains in the east of the USA in historical times . H. amplectens has so far only been found in four locations in Australia and New Zealand .

Hypocreopsis lichenoides inhabits areas in several climate zones; the species occurs in temperate to polar regions of the northern hemisphere.
