The false hydrangeas ( Deinanthe ) are a genus of plants from the hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae). The genus includes two species that are native to Japan and China, respectively.

description

The species of the genus are perennial, herbaceous plants that grow from a rhizome and are up to 50 centimeters high. The stalked, opposite leaves are pointed at the extreme end or are forked, the edge is roughly serrated.

The inflorescences are zymous panicles with nodding flowers . The outer flowers are sterile and smaller than the inner ones. The five to six sepals lie on top of each other like roof tiles . The five to eight petals, which are also arranged like roof tiles and fleshy on the inner flowers, are egg-shaped, white, red-violet to blue and bent back during flowering.

The stamens of the more than 200 stamens are thread-like, the stylodes fused. The medium-sized ovary is four to sechsfächrig, the ovules are that cross and hang down. The fruit is a capsule that opens at the very end to release the numerous, 0.5 to 1.5 millimeters long, winged seeds. During the opening of the capsule, the overgrown stylodes tear apart again.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.

Occurrence

The blue false hydrangea is native to China, the two-column false hydrangea in Japan. Both species are found in moist mountain forests on wet rocks.

Botanical history and systematics

The genus was first described by Carl Maximowicz in 1867. Within the family it is placed in the subfamily Hydrangeoideae and there in the tribe Hydrangeae. There are two kinds:
