In the Old Testament, Schelef is Joktan's second eldest son and descendant of Noah .

etymology

The Hebrew name שֶׁלֶף Sheleph stands in the Masoretic text in both Gen 10.26  EU and in 1 Chr 10.20  EU in the pausal שָׁ֑לֶף Schālef . The verb שׁלף schalaf means "to pull out / pull out". Targum pseudo-Jonathan refers to this derivation when it is reported there by Schelef that he had diverted the waters of the rivers. The Septuagint gives the name based on the pausal form as σαλεφ salef .

Biblical report

After the table of peoples Gen 10.26  EU and after 1 Chr 1.20  EU, Schelef is the second oldest son of Joktan. His brothers are called Almodad , Hazarmawet , Jerach , Hadoram , Usal , Dikla, Obal, Abimaël, Sheba , Ofir , Hawila and Jobab. They settled from Mescha via Sefar to the Eastern Mountains. The section in Gen 10: 25-29  EU , in which Sheef and his brothers are mentioned, does not belong to the priestly scriptures.

Sheef is also the name of a South Arabian or Jeminite tribe.
