Jerach

Jerach is the fourth oldest son of Joktan and descendant of Noah in the Old Testament .

etymology

The Hebrew personal name יֶרַח jæraḥ , German 'Jerach' is in the Masoretic text both in Gen 10.26  EU and in 1 Chr 10.20  EU in the pausal form יָרַח jāraḥ . The Septuagint gives the name based on the pausal form as ιαραχ iarach , the Vulgate as Iare and the Samaritan Pentateuch as Yāra . Compare can be Ugaritic YRḪM , Egyptian- Aramaic jrḥw and palmyrenisch jrḥj .

Biblical narration

Jerach is according to the table of peoples Gen 10.26  EU and according to 1 Chr 1.20  EU the fourth oldest son of Joktan. His brothers are Almodad , Schelef , Hazarmawet , Hadoram , Usal , Dikla, Obal, Abimaël, Sheba , Ofir , Hawila and Jobab. They settled from Mescha via Sefar to the Eastern Mountains. The section in Gen 10: 25-29  EU , in which Jerach and his brothers are mentioned, does not belong to the priestly scriptures.

Jerach is also the name of a people and an area in South Man and North Yemen .
