The Leaning Tower of Ząbkowice Śląskie (also known as the Leaning Tower of Frankenstein ) is the bell tower of the parish church of St. Anne of Ząbkowice Śląskie in Lower Silesia . The church was dedicated to Anne of Swidnica of St. Anne consecrated.

history

The church was built between 1413 and 1415 after the previously existing wooden church fell victim to a fire. A few meters away was the rest of an old defense tower of the oldest city fortifications. The mighty masonry made it possible to build a new bell tower on it. According to legend, the tower was already erected crookedly by the builder, but it probably sank due to earthquakes. The first inclination was determined after tremors on September 15, 1590, the Neulengbach earthquake in 1590 . In 1592 subsidence of the tower was found again, as a result of which the vault in the lower room had to be cleared. On August 24, 1598 , in Bardo Śląskie (German Wartha ), ten kilometers away , a massive rock fall ( landslide of Wartha ) occurred, whereupon the tower tilted again.

On April 24, 1858 , a fire destroyed almost the entire city except for the Church of St. Anna and parts of the city wall. The leaning tower in the upper part was destroyed. It was rebuilt in 1860 with vertical masonry, closed by a crenellated crown, up to 34 meters high.

The overhang of the tower is 150 cm today, which means it deviates 2.55 degrees from the vertical. No change in the slope has been observed in recent years.
