The slate back pigeon ( Ducula cineracea ), and Timor-pigeon called, is a species from the family of pigeons . It occurs exclusively on two islands in the Lesser Sunda Islands . There are two subspecies.

The IUCN has classified the stock situation of the slate-back fruit pigeon as potentially endangered ( near threatened ) since October 2016 . In previous years, the IUCN classified the species as endangered ( endangered one).

Appearance

The slate-back fruit pigeon reaches a body length of 39 to 43 centimeters, of which 14.5 to 15.7 centimeters are on the tail. The wing length is 21.5 to 22.2 centimeters. The beak becomes 1.4 to 1.9 centimeters long. No weight data are yet available for this species.

The forehead, the reins, the top of the head and the neck are dark soot-gray and merge into a light slate-gray neck. The rest of the upper surface of the body is black-brown to slate-gray, the feathers on the mantle and the wing covers have an oily green sheen. The wings of the hand are lined with a pale isabel color on the outside flags. The tail plumage is black-brown without gloss on the upper side. The chin and the middle of the throat are wine red, the chest plumage is wine red with a light gray tone. The belly is lighter than the chest plumage and has a slightly brownish tone. The feathers on the flanks and legs are also lined with a pale cinnamon color. The under tail-coverts have the same color as the belly, the tail plumage is matt gray on the underside. The iris is dark, the beak is black, the legs and feet are black-purple.

Fledglings are similar to adult birds, but have wing-coverts lined with maroon. In general, their plumage also lacks the oily-green sheen typical of adult birds. The tail plumage is brownier with them with pale red-brown feather ends. The upper tail cover is brown.

Possible confusion

In the distribution area of the slate back fruit pigeon, there are two other types of pigeons with which it can be confused. The pink-headed fruit pigeon is found predominantly in the lowlands and has a wine-colored head and ear covers that contrast with a gray rear neck. The under tail-coverts are maroon and darker than the belly. The wax skin and legs are reddish. There is a greater possibility of confusion with the white-cheeked pigeon belonging to the field pigeons , which can only be clearly identified in good lighting conditions. The most striking distinguishing features are the metallic violet to green shimmering feather edges on the coat plumage and the greenish shimmer of the dark slate-gray breast plumage. The iris of this species is also yellow or red and not dark like the slate-back fruit pigeon.

Distribution area and habitat

The slate-back fruit pigeon lives in the mountains of the Southeast Asian islands of Timor and Wetar , both of which are part of the Lesser Sunda Islands. On both islands their habitat is shrinking due to the deforestation of the forests. There seems to be a stable population at Gunung Mutis ( West Timor ). The birds have recently also been observed in coffee plantations in Ermera ( East Timor ). In 2009 the animals were also discovered on Monte Mundo Perdido .
