Historic ship mill on the Petriförder

The ship mill at Petriförder in Magdeburg is a fully functional replica of a ship mill from 1874, completed in 1999 .

Ship mills are stationary floating grain mills on rivers that are driven by the current. In Magdeburg they were to be found numerous on the Elbe .

A conveyor is a cut in the high terrain on the banks of the Elbe, through which you can get from the higher city to the banks of the Elbe. The Petriförder was named after the nearby Petri Church.

history

On the Elbe as well as on the rivers Danube , Rhine , Weser , Leine , Mulde , Oder and Saale , ship mills could be found everywhere. One was used to the sight of the moored ships that lay in the same place day in and day out. The first documented mention of ship mills on the Rhine was in the year 840. The first documented specimens on the Elbe were documented in 1227 near Meissen . The number increased and around the time of the Reformation there were 534 on the Elbe. In 1852 there were 115 Elbe ship mills, but 22 years later the last of them were shut down - they were in the way of the constantly growing Elbe shipping.

function

The ship mills were tied with several ropes so that they always lay in the same place in the river. It was oriented so that the paddle wheel was driven by the current. Depending on the strength of the current, you could rattle it up or down. With it you could practically control the speed of the millstone. The shaft of the paddle wheel then drove a gear made of wood in the building part of the ship, via which the millstone was then set in motion. The most vulnerable parts of this construction were the wooden bearing shells of the drive shafts . These were lubricated with beeswax or beef fat. For the Schiffermüller, that was the most important maintenance work on the entire drive.
