action

prolog

Vienna , 1789, Theater auf der Wieden : Eleonore Schikaneder inherited the theater business after the death of her partner Johann Friedel . As a woman, however, she is not allowed to lead the stage alone. When Eleonore turns down an offer to buy from her competitor Karl Marinelli , the only way out is to work again with her husband, Emanuel Schikaneder, from whom Eleonore separated years ago. The ensemble is desperate when Eleonore categorically rejects this option. ( Out! Over!) Eleonore begins to tell how it all began and why she never wants to see Emanuel again.

1st act

Her story begins 14 years ago: the young Eleonore (at that time still with the surname Art (h)) joins Franz Moser's famous theater company as an actress. (Innsbruck ) The charismatic leading actor and author Joseph Johann Schikaneder is immediately taken with the intelligent woman and tries to land with her. Although the attraction is mutual, Eleanor rejects the obvious womanizer for the time being. ( Dream big)

During a ballet class, the ensemble whispers about Schikaneder and Eleonore. It can no longer be overlooked that the two are madly in love with each other. ( Something happens) When Franz Moser retires after the death of his beloved wife, Eleonore Schikaneder helps to take over the troupe. ( Without her)

Eleanor agrees to marry him. In honor of his bride, Schikaneder decided to adopt a new first name that perfectly matches hers: Emanuel. ( Love wins)

The two are not only an absolute dream couple in their private lives, but also on stage. As the acclaimed acting stars of the troupe, they hurry from city to city and from success to success. ( The brightest dream couple)

Eleonore is informed about an affair of her husband by her friend Barbara Gerl: It is obviously not the first, but this time the friend thinks it is something "serious". Eleanor doesn't want to hear about it. She has learned to look away over time. ( Looking away) The shy young author and actor Johann Friedel, who is madly in love with Eleonore, comforts and woos her, but she rejects him. ( Someone like you)

Emanuel is able to win Eleanor back to his side with his lofty plans for a permanent theater and a completely new, German-language opera . ( Dream big recapitulation)

But when Eleanor is confronted by Maria Anna Miller, her husband's naive young lover, that she is expecting a child from him, she is deeply hurt. ( Rejoice with me)

She seeks consolation from Johann Friedel and persuades the ailing young man to leave with her to open her own permanent theater in Vienna. Johann gives Eleonore a valuable diamond necklace that he inherited from his mother. ( Now and here)

Maria Anna informs Emanuel that his wife is leaving. When Maria Anna has to understand that Emanuel will never take her to wife, she leaves too. Emanuel is deeply shocked that Eleonore has left him, but does not want to admit it to himself. ( So many fish in the sea)

Eleonore and Johana, Maria Anna and Emanuel each look forward to a new beginning, while Emanuel's ensemble is desperate about the breakup of the troupe. ( Finale 1st act)

2nd act

Without Eleanor, Emanuel and his troops are plagued by failures. His balloon launch opera is a disaster and he spends way too much money. Eleonore and Johann have a similar experience in Vienna. You have taken over the theater on the Wieden, but Johann lacks Emanuel's daring so that the troupe can succeed accordingly. (Something important is missing)

When Emanuel enters into a relationship with the Prince's wife in Regensburg, he has to flee head over heels to avoid arrest. In Vienna, the sick Johann has taken over himself completely and dies in Eleonore's arms, not without making her promise to continue the theater. Back in Vienna in 1789, Eleonore's ensemble is deeply moved and everyone understands that she does not want to take her husband back. But there is a small problem: Barbara has already brought Emanuel here. The injuries of the past immediately lead to a tumultuous argument.

Ultimately, however, Emanuel and Eleonore admit that they depend on each other in this situation. Your relationship should remain purely business. (Purely business)

But even in the near future, the two behave like cats and dogs and the troops' financial turmoil is getting bigger. In front of the management office, Barbara, Emanuel's best friend Benedikt Schack and Josepha Hofer, the group's diva and Emanuel's current “favorite”, discuss who could calm them down. (I why?)

When Karl Marinelli renews his offer to buy the theater because he needs a second house for a new opera, Emanuel feels challenged and claims that he would also be writing a great new opera. The rejected Marinelli leaves with a threat. (That what I want)

Eleonore's indignation that Emanuel only boasted only lasted for a short time. Together they will soon be overflowing with ideas for a completely new form of opera that will revolutionize theater. (Dream big recapitulation)

The two succeed in persuading Josef von Bauernfeld - to whom they actually already owe a lot of money - to join the show as a financier. (Money and luck)

During the first rehearsals, the ensemble thinks everything about the new opera is terrible. Some even want to leave - until they hear parts of the score intoned by the orchestra for the first time: they are immediately enchanted. (This is going to be a failure!)

The dress rehearsal of the new opera is abruptly interrupted by two officials. Karl Marinelli told them that Emanuel used more candles than allowed. Since Emanuel cannot pay the fine, the officials order the theater to be closed. The ensemble leaves the house, Eleonore also leaves without a word. Marinelli triumphs. Emanuel is devastated. He believes that he has finally lost his wife. (Last curtain)

But then Eleanor returns: she uses her favorite memento of Johann - the necklace - to pay the fine. Emanuel thanks Eleonore's support. He senses that she wouldn't be so behind him if there wasn't still love involved. Eleonore rejects that. Just when Eleanor does admit that Emanuel is right, that he will always be more to her than a “business relationship”, she sees him hugging his former lover Maria Anna Miller. Horrified, Eleonore decides to leave immediately, from now on she wants to live her own dreams, alone. (My song)

But Maria Anna can stop her: she only came back because she is impoverished and can no longer feed her son. She would therefore like to leave him with Emanuel and Eleonore. The deeply moved Eleonore promises Maria Anna her support. (I'm happy for you)

Emanuel and Eleonore finally reconcile. Together they enjoy the great success of their new opera on the day of the premiere: “ The Magic Flute ”. (Finale 2nd act)
